Good Flag: Zhleznogorsk, Russia

This is probably the best city flag in all of Russia. And I mean all.

If you don’t know why a bear is manhandling an atom on the flag, here is the city history of Zhleznogorsk (whew!).

Zhleznogorsk was founded for one purpose and one purpose only: weapons-grade plutonium. It was the 50s, WWII was over, and the USA was at the beginning of the Cold War with the USSR. As such, the city of Zhleznogorsk wanted to put a bear splitting an atom on their flag, and it looks cool. While Zhleznogowhatever is probably not in the plutonium business anymore, the bear flag (not to be confused with California’s) is awesome and a staple of the vexillology (aka the discussing of what flags are good and repeating horrible flags and flag facts) community.
